Guide
The EMI formula
EMI = P × r × (1+r)n ÷ ((1+r)n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of monthly instalments. Each EMI is the same amount, but in the early months most of it is interest; as the outstanding balance falls, more of each EMI goes towards the principal. That is why prepaying in the first few years saves the most interest.
How to use the result
A common rule is to keep all your EMIs below 40–50% of your monthly take-home income. If the EMI feels heavy, try a longer tenure – the EMI falls, but total interest rises. Compare offers from two or three lenders by changing only the rate: even 0.5% lower on a 20-year home loan can save lakhs. For a car or bike loan, compare the EMI with the on-road price and your fuel costs before you decide.
What this calculator does not include
Processing fees, insurance, GST on fees, prepayment charges and floating-rate changes are not included. Real bank EMIs can differ by a few rupees due to rounding and the date of disbursement. Always read the final sanction letter. The calculator is for planning only and is not financial advice.
Worked examples
Home loan: ₹20,00,000 at 8.5% for 20 years gives an EMI of about ₹17,356 and total interest of about ₹21.66 lakh – more than the loan itself. Car loan: ₹6,00,000 at 9% for 5 years gives about ₹12,455 a month and ₹1.47 lakh interest. Personal loan: ₹1,00,000 at 14% for 2 years gives about ₹4,801 a month and ₹15,231 interest. Try the same home loan for 15 years instead of 20: the EMI rises, but you save several lakh in interest. Use the year-wise table above to see how the balance falls.
