Guide
Where the rates come from
The European Central Bank publishes euro reference rates for about 30 currencies every working day around 16:00 CET. We read them through Frankfurter, a free open-source API that republishes the ECB data, and store one copy per day on our server. Cross rates such as USD→INR are calculated from the euro rates. Weekends and holidays show the last working-day rate.
Why your bank rate is different
Reference rates are mid-market rates. Banks, card networks and money changers add a margin, typically 1–4%, plus fees. When you pay abroad with a card, expect the final rupee amount to be higher than this converter shows. For remittances, compare the total rupees received, not just the advertised rate. These rates are for information only and not for trading.
Common uses
Check how much an online purchase in dollars will cost in rupees, budget a trip to Dubai, Europe or the UK, price an item for a buyer abroad on FastBuySale, or understand salary offers in foreign currency. Some currencies, such as the UAE dirham, are not in the ECB list; for those, use a bank's published rate.
How cross rates are worked out
The ECB publishes every rate against the euro. If 1 euro equals A rupees and 1 euro equals B US dollars, then 1 dollar equals A ÷ B rupees. The converter does this for any pair you choose, so dollar-to-pound or yen-to-rupee are just as accurate as euro-to-rupee. The rate date under the result tells you which ECB publication was used. We store the rates once a day on our server and never call the source on every page view, which keeps the page fast and respects the free service. If the source is unreachable, the last saved rates are shown with their date rather than made-up numbers.
