Tipping is not part of everyday life in Tokyo. Restaurants, taxis, hair salons and hotels do not expect a tip, and staff may politely hand money back if you leave it on the table. Good service is considered part of the price. The calculator on this page is still useful in Tokyo, but mainly for splitting a bill and checking service and cover charges rather than adding a tip.
Facts that change the answer
- Tipping: not customary; the calculator default here is 0%
- Consumption tax: 10% (8% on takeaway food), already included in displayed prices
- Izakaya often add an otoshi cover charge, a small starter served to every guest
- Some hotels and upscale restaurants add a service charge of about 10–15%
- Currency: Japanese yen (JPY), no decimals
Worked example for Tokyo
Four friends at an izakaya get a bill of ¥18,400, including the otoshi charge. With no tip the split is ¥4,600 each. Turn on rounding and set the tip to 0% to get an even per-person amount. If you are at a hotel restaurant with a 10% service charge, enter 10 to see the real total.
Japan has required tax-inclusive price display since April 2021, so the price on the menu is normally the price you pay, apart from any cover or service charge, which should be listed on the menu or bill.
Splitting the bill (warikan) is common among friends and colleagues. Some restaurants prefer one payment per table, so the usual habit is for one person to pay and the others to settle up in cash or by a payment app.
If you want to thank someone for exceptional help, such as a ryokan host or a private guide, a small gift or an envelope is more natural than leaving cash on a table.
