Tipping in Sydney is optional. Hospitality workers are covered by award wages, so a tip is a thank-you rather than part of their pay. At a sit-down restaurant many diners leave around 10 percent for good service or round up the bill, while cafés, pubs and takeaways do not expect anything.
Facts that change the answer
- Tipping: optional; about 10% for good table service
- GST (10%) is already included in menu prices
- Weekend and public-holiday surcharges, often 10–15%, are allowed if they are clearly shown
- Card surcharges may apply; they should not exceed the business's cost of accepting the card
- Currency: Australian dollar (AUD)
Worked example for Sydney
A Sunday lunch for three comes to A$120.00 before a 15% public-holiday or weekend surcharge of A$18.00, making A$138.00. A 10% tip on the original A$120 adds A$12.00, so the total is A$150.00, or A$50.00 each. Enter the bill after any surcharge, then pick your tip.
Surcharges are the bigger cost in Sydney than tips. Restaurants must show them clearly on the menu or at the entrance, and the menu price is then the weekday price.
Card terminals sometimes offer tip buttons of 5, 10 or 15 percent. You can choose no tip without any problem. Rounding up a taxi or rideshare fare is common, and tipping hotel porters a few dollars is appreciated but not required.
If you are splitting a group bill, the calculator's rounding option gives each person an even dollar amount, which is handy when everyone pays separately by card.
