Guide

How the conversion works

Everything is converted through the annual figure. Hourly pay × hours per week × weeks per year gives annual pay. Annual pay ÷ 12 gives monthly pay, annual ÷ weeks gives weekly pay, and weekly ÷ working days gives daily pay. With the common full-time assumption of 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks, a year has 2,080 working hours.

Worked example

An hourly rate of 25 at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks equals 52,000 a year, about 4,333 a month and 1,000 a week. In the other direction, a 60,000 salary is about 28.85 an hour on the same schedule. If you work only 48 weeks because of unpaid leave, the 25 hourly rate gives 48,000 instead.

Comparing job offers

When comparing a salaried role with an hourly or freelance one, convert both to the same basis. Freelancers should remember that they pay for their own equipment, holidays, sick days and often extra taxes and pension contributions, so a freelance hourly rate usually needs to be 25–50% higher than the equivalent employee rate to match the same take-home value. Also consider overtime rules, bonuses and benefits such as health cover.

Gross versus net pay

This calculator converts gross pay, before tax and deductions. Income tax, social contributions and pension deductions vary widely between countries and personal circumstances. Use the result to compare offers like for like, then check your local tax calculator for take-home pay.

Working weeks and hours around the world

Standard full-time hours range from about 35 to 48 a week depending on the country, and paid leave ranges from a few days to six weeks. Adjust the two schedule fields to match your contract for an accurate result. The tool runs fully in your browser and the currency is set from your location.
