Worked example for Tokyo
A return trip from central Tokyo to Nikko is about 280 km. A car that does 14 km per litre needs 20 litres, which costs ¥3,390 at the Tokyo average. Expressway tolls, often several thousand yen for a trip like this, are extra and usually cost more than the fuel.
Japanese car specs give fuel economy in km per litre, so the calculator is set to km/L for Tokyo. The official WLTC figure in the brochure is a good starting point, but real city driving in Tokyo traffic is usually lower.
In Japan diesel is cheaper than regular petrol, the opposite of the UK and the US, and many self-service stations are slightly cheaper than full-service ones. ANRE publishes the survey weekly, usually on Wednesday, with figures for each prefecture.
Most trips inside Tokyo are faster and cheaper by train. Driving makes more sense for groups heading to the mountains or coast, where the per-person fuel cost becomes small.
Rental cars in Japan are usually returned with a full tank, and the shop checks the receipt from a nearby station. When you plan a day trip, add a few extra kilometres for finding a station on the way back. Electric and hybrid cars are common in Tokyo rental fleets; for a hybrid, use its real km per litre, which is often above 20 km/L on country roads but lower in city traffic.
