Tip Calculator for Mumbai

In Mumbai a tip of 5 to 10 percent is customary at sit-down restaurants when service was good, and many people simply round up. Restaurants are not allowed to add a service charge to the bill by default or make it compulsory: Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) guidelines from July 2022 say any tip or service charge is voluntary, and the Delhi High Court upheld them in March 2025.

Facts that change the answer

• Customary restaurant tip: 5–10%
• Service charge: cannot be added automatically or made compulsory (CCPA guidelines, 2022)
• GST on most standalone restaurant food: 5%, shown on the bill
• Currency: Indian rupee (INR)

Worked example for Mumbai

A family dinner for four in Mumbai costs ₹3,200 including GST. A 10% tip adds ₹320, so the total is ₹3,520, or ₹880 each. With a 5% tip the total is ₹3,360. Turn on rounding to get an even rupee amount for UPI transfers between friends.

If a service charge appears on your bill, you can ask for it to be removed. Complaints can be made through the National Consumer Helpline, 1915.

Many people now tip by UPI or ask for it to be added to the card payment, but cash given directly to the waiter is still common. Delivery riders on food apps can be tipped inside the app, and the full amount goes to the rider on most platforms.

For splitting the bill among friends, the per-person figure is what you send by UPI. Rounding avoids paise and makes settling up quicker.
