Tipping is expected in New York City. At a sit-down restaurant most diners leave 18 to 20 percent, and many card terminals suggest 20, 25 or 30 percent. Servers in New York can be paid a lower cash wage than the general minimum because tips are counted towards their pay, which is why the tip is treated as part of the price rather than a bonus.
Facts that change the answer

- Calculator default here: 20%
- Currency: US dollar (USD)
Worked example for New York City
A dinner for four with a pre-tax subtotal of $160.00 adds $14.20 in sales tax. A 20% tip on the subtotal is $32.00, so the total is $206.20, or $51.55 each. If you tip on the after-tax figure instead, the tip rises to $34.84. Enter the subtotal in the calculator to tip on the pre-tax amount, which is the usual habit.
A quick New York shortcut is to double the tax line: 8.875% doubled is 17.75%, close to the low end of the normal range. Many people round up from there.
Check the bill before you add anything. Some restaurants add an automatic gratuity for larger groups, often for parties of six or more, and it is printed on the receipt. If it is already there, you do not need to tip again on top.
Counter service, coffee shops and food halls usually show a tip screen too. Tipping there is optional and smaller amounts are normal. Delivery drivers, bartenders and hotel staff are usually tipped in cash or through the app.
