Selling an old phone takes about an hour of preparation, and that hour decides whether you get a fair price or a pile of lowball messages. This guide covers what to do before you list, how to describe the phone honestly, and how to close the deal without being cheated.

Before you list: protect your data

  • Back up photos, contacts and chats to your Google or Apple account, then check that the backup finished.
  • Sign out of your Google account / Apple ID and remove screen lock. On iPhones, turn off Find My; on Android, remove the Google account before a factory reset, otherwise the next owner may be locked out.
  • Remove the SIM and the memory card. Do a full factory reset and reboot once to confirm the phone starts at the welcome screen.
  • Note the IMEI (dial *#06#). Keep the screenshot; a genuine buyer may ask to check it matches the box and bill.

Collect what raises the price

  • The original box, the invoice or bill, the charger and the cable. A phone with a bill and box usually sells faster because the buyer feels safer.
  • Warranty status: if the brand warranty is still valid, say the month it ends and keep the bill ready. Do not claim warranty you cannot show.
  • Check battery health on iPhones (Settings > Battery) and mention the number. For Android, mention any battery replacement honestly.

Photograph it so buyers trust you

  • Use daylight and a plain surface. Take the front with the screen ON, the back, all four edges, the camera glass and the charging port.
  • Show scratches and dents clearly. A listing that shows the flaws gets fewer time-wasters than one that hides them.
  • Add one photo of the box and bill. Never show your IMEI, address or any personal data in the photo.

Write a title and description that answer the first questions

  • Title formula: brand + model + storage + colour + age, for example "Samsung Galaxy A-series 6/128GB black, 1.5 years old".
  • In the description say: age, battery health, screen or body marks, repairs done, what is in the box, whether it is single owner, and why you are selling.
  • Say the city and the area where you can meet. Local buyers search by city, so set it correctly on the listing.

Price it with live comparison, not guesswork

  • Search the same model on FastBuySale and other sites and compare only listings with the same storage and similar condition.
  • Keep 5 to 10 percent room for negotiation. Very low prices attract scammers; very high prices get no messages. Compare real listings in your own city; see "What moves the price of a used phone" below.
  • If the phone is sold out of warranty and 3+ years old, price for speed. Old phones lose value every month you wait.

What moves the price of a used phone

  • Pushes it up: more storage and RAM, a recent model, the original box and bill, remaining brand warranty, and a battery that is healthy or recently replaced with a genuine part.
  • Pulls it down: a cracked or replaced screen of unknown quality, dents, a repaired motherboard, no bill or box, and software that no longer gets security updates.
  • Also lowers it: a network-locked phone, an account that is still signed in, or an unclear ownership story.
  • Phones lose value fastest in the months after a new model launches, so list the old one early if you plan to upgrade.

Closing the deal safely

  • Meet in a busy public place, in daylight, such as a mall food court or a mobile shop with a counter. Take a friend if the amount is large.
  • Let the buyer inspect the phone and make a test call from their own SIM. Do not let them walk away with the phone to "show someone".
  • Accept cash that you can count, or a UPI transfer that you see credited in your own app before you hand over the phone. Screenshots of payments are not proof.
  • Never share an OTP, never click a link a buyer sends, and be careful of anyone who wants to pay extra or "send a courier to your home".
  • Do a quick handover: remove your accounts again, power off, give the box and bill, and write the buyer name and number in your phone.

Safety tips

  • Meet in a public, well-lit place and, where possible, take someone with you.
  • Inspect the item before you pay and check it matches the listing.
  • Never pay in advance, share OTPs, or move payment outside the agreed meeting.
  • Keep contact through the listing page — contact details are privacy-gated in the app.
  • Report suspicious sellers instead of continuing the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Should I sell my phone without the box and bill?

Yes, you can, but expect a lower price. If you cannot show the bill, say so in the listing and be ready for questions about where the phone came from.

How do I stop buyers who only ask the last price on chat?

Put your firm price and what you will include in the description, then reply only to buyers who ask about the phone or agree to meet. Serious buyers usually ask for photos or a meeting time.

Is it safe to sell a phone that is still under EMI?

Complete the EMI or foreclose the loan first. A phone with a pending EMI can be blocked or create trouble for the new owner and for you.

What if the buyer comes back saying the phone has a problem?

Take photos and a short video of the working phone at handover and mention that the sale is as-is after inspection. This protects an honest seller.
