A second-hand phone can save you a lot of money, but a rushed purchase can leave you with a locked, stolen or half-dead device. Spend ten minutes on the checks below before you pay anything.

Before you meet the seller

  • Compare the asking price with several similar listings. If it is far below the others, ask yourself why.
  • Ask for the IMEI number and the bill. A genuine seller can usually share a photo of the box label and bill with personal data hidden.
  • Ask whether the phone has ever been repaired, whether it has the original charger, and how old the battery is.
  • Fix the meeting in a public place and carry a power bank and a charging cable, plus your own SIM.

The 12 checks at the meeting

  • 1. IMEI: dial *#06# and match it with the box and the bill.
  • 2. Locks: ask the seller to sign out of the Google or Apple account in front of you and show the phone reaches the setup screen.
  • 3. Screen: open a white image and a black image and look for dead pixels, burn-in, green lines and yellow patches.
  • 4. Touch: draw across the whole screen in a notes app to find dead zones.
  • 5. Body: check for bent frame, loose back panel or signs of opening.
  • 6. Battery: on iPhones check Battery Health; on Android check charging speed and heat. A phone that drops 10 percent in minutes is a problem.
  • 7. Cameras: test front, rear, zoom, video recording and flash.
  • 8. Audio: make a call, test the speaker, earpiece and microphone.
  • 9. Network: insert your SIM, check signal, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  • 10. Sensors: test fingerprint or face unlock, auto-rotate and proximity during a call.
  • 11. Ports and buttons: charging port, volume and power keys, SIM tray.
  • 12. Software: confirm the phone is not on a very old version that no longer gets security updates.

Documents and warranty

  • Ask for the original bill. Warranty usually follows the phone, but check the date and the brand service centre rules.
  • If there is no bill, either negotiate a clear discount or walk away. Do not buy a phone if the seller cannot explain how they got it.
  • Note the seller name, number and address in your phone and take a photo of the phone with the seller in a busy place if you are comfortable.

Paying the right way

  • Pay only after you are satisfied with every check.
  • Prefer UPI or cash. Do not pay an advance for "booking" and never pay a stranger to a different person's account.
  • Never share an OTP or install any app on request. If the price changes at the meeting, you are free to leave.

Safety tips

  • Meet in a public, well-lit place and, where possible, take someone with you.
  • Inspect the item before you pay and check it matches the listing.
  • Never pay in advance, share OTPs, or move payment outside the agreed meeting.
  • Keep contact through the listing page — contact details are privacy-gated in the app.
  • Report suspicious sellers instead of continuing the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Is buying a used iPhone riskier than buying a used Android?

The main risk is the Apple ID lock. If the seller cannot sign out of iCloud in front of you, do not buy. Also check Battery Health and whether the screen or battery has been replaced.

How can I check if a phone is stolen?

You cannot always know, which is why the bill, a valid IMEI and a clear explanation from the seller matter. If the seller refuses to show a bill and the price is suspiciously low, skip the deal.

What is a fair price for a used phone?

It depends on model, age and condition. Compare several live listings on FastBuySale in your own city and note the middle of the asking prices; model, storage, age, battery and bill all change the price.

Can I return a second-hand phone?

Usually not, because private sales are as-is. That is why you should test everything at the meeting and pay only once you are happy.
