How to sell a used laptop in India

Protect your data

• Back up your documents to cloud or an external drive. Sign out of all accounts, browsers, email and cloud storage.
• Deauthorise apps such as Office and Adobe, and remove device links on your Microsoft, Google or Apple accounts.
• Reset the laptop to factory settings or reinstall the operating system with the option to remove everything. On modern laptops also remove saved Wi-Fi networks and fingerprint data.

Describe the specs the way buyers search

• Brand, model number, processor generation, RAM, storage type and size (SSD or HDD), screen size, graphics card and operating system.
• Battery backup in hours with a realistic estimate, and whether the original charger is included.
• Age, purchase invoice, any repairs, and cosmetic issues like keys, hinges and dents.

Photos and proof

• Take photos with the laptop open and showing the desktop, with the closed lid, ports, keyboard and the bottom label showing the model.
• Take a screenshot of the system information page and the battery report, and attach it to your listing.
• Keep the bill and warranty ready to show at the meeting.

Price and negotiate

• Compare with other listings of the same model and specification, noticing that SSD, RAM and battery health make a big difference. See our guide to used price ranges for rough ideas.
• Do not hide faults. A buyer will test the battery and keyboard anyway.
• Fix a firm minimum price before meeting.

What decides a used laptop price

• Processor generation and RAM: 8 GB is a practical minimum today, and 16 GB usually sells faster.
• An SSD instead of an old hard disk, and the storage size.
• Battery health and the screen: a worn battery or a dull screen lowers the price.
• The original charger, the bill, remaining warranty and a body with no cracked hinges raise it.

Meeting and payment

• Meet in a public place with a power socket, such as a mall or a shop. Let the buyer check the specifications themselves.
• Accept UPI or cash only after the buyer is satisfied and you can see the money.
• After the sale, remove the buyer's access to any of your accounts and note the date and the serial number.
