How to sell old furniture online in India

Furniture is bulky, so buyers decide on three things: size, condition and how it will reach their home. Answer these in your listing and your furniture will sell faster, usually within a week or two if the price is fair.

Clean it and fix the small things

Wipe wood with a damp cloth and a little polish, vacuum sofas and clean stains. Tighten loose screws.
Cover small scratches with a matching marker or polish, but never hide major damage.
Take apart large items such as wardrobes if you can, and keep the screws in labelled bags.

Measure and describe

Write the length, width and height in centimetres or feet. Add the weight if it is heavy, and mention whether it can be dismantled.
Name the material honestly: solid wood, engineered wood, metal, fabric or leather, and the age.
List what is included: mattress, cushions, extra shelves, keys.

Photos that sell

Photograph the piece in a bright room against a clear wall, from the front, side and close up of the material and any damage.
Show the item next to a door or a person if it helps to judge the size.
Add a photo of the label or brand if it is a known one.

Set a fair price

As a thumb rule, used furniture in good condition sells for much less than the new price, and the discount grows with age and visible wear. Compare live listings for the same type in your city.
Heavy items may be sold lower if the buyer must organise transport. If you offer to help, say so in your listing.
Hygiene items like used mattresses are hard to sell. Price them accordingly or consider donating them.

What changes the price of furniture and appliances

Condition, age and brand: well-known brands with easy service are easier to resell.
Whether the item works on the day of the visit, and whether any warranty remains.
Moving cost and floor level: heavy items on upper floors without a lift are harder to sell.
Season: ACs and coolers sell better in summer, heaters in winter. Used mattresses are hard to sell unless clean and lightly used.

Pickup, delivery and payment

Say clearly that the buyer must arrange pickup, or say what you charge for delivery in your city.
Invite the buyer to see the item at your home during daytime. Have another person at home.
Take UPI or cash only after the buyer has checked the item, and help them load it. Do not accept advance payments from strangers who never visit.
