How to sell your used car in India
A car is the biggest item most people sell privately, so preparation and paperwork matter more than speed. Clean papers and honest details bring serious buyers, and a proper ownership transfer keeps you safe from future challans and legal trouble.

Documents to collect
- RC (registration certificate), valid insurance and PUC, plus all service records and the owner manual.
- Loan closure letter and Form 35 (for removal of hypothecation) if the car was financed. The lender's name must be removed from the RC before transfer.
- Duplicate keys and any extended warranty papers, accessory bills and tyre invoices.
- Your ID and address proof, which are needed for the transfer forms.
Prepare the car
- Do a deep clean inside and outside. Remove personal items, air out the cabin and fix any bad smell.
- Fix cheap issues: wipers, bulbs, a flat spare tyre and a loose trim. Avoid big repairs unless they raise the price by more than their cost.
- Get a basic service done and keep the bill. Tell buyers what was done and when.
Price with care
- Check the same make, model, year and variant on live listings in your city, and compare only cars with similar kilometres and owner count.
- Add or subtract for condition, accident history, tyre life, insurance validity and colour. See "What raises or lowers a used car's value" below.
- Keep some negotiation room, but do not inflate the price too much. Buyers compare quickly.
What raises or lowers a used car's value
- Raises it: a single owner, genuine kilometres, full service history, valid insurance with a good no-claim bonus, new tyres and an original, unrepainted body.
- Lowers it: accident or flood repair, repainting, an odometer mismatch, missing service records, pending challans, and ageing tyres or battery.
- Local rules matter: check the age and fuel restrictions that apply in your city before you set the price.
- A mechanic inspection report is a strong negotiating tool for both sides.
Create a strong listing
- Take 12 to 20 photos in daylight: all four corners, the dashboard with the odometer, seats, boot, engine bay, tyres and the RC.
- Write the variant, fuel, transmission, year, kilometres, owners, insurance expiry, service history, accidents or repainting and any known issues.
- Add the city and the area, and a convenient time to see the car.
Test drives and negotiation
- Check the buyer's driving licence and note it. Accompany them on the test drive and do not hand the keys to a stranger alone.
- Welcome an inspection by a mechanic of their choice. It builds trust and shortens negotiations.
- Do not share your bank details or any OTP. Beware of anyone who sends a cheque or payment screenshot and asks you to release the car first.
Ownership transfer and handover
- Accept payment in a traceable way, such as bank transfer, and wait until it is credited. For large amounts, meet at a bank branch.
- Sign the transfer forms with the buyer, commonly Form 29 and Form 30, and submit them to the RTO. Rules can change, so check the Parivahan site or your RTO.
- Inform your insurer, remove FASTag from your account if it is linked to you, and take a handover photo with the date, the odometer and the buyer's ID copy.

Frequently asked questions
Should I sell my car to a dealer or privately?
Dealers pay faster with less hassle, but often offer less. A private sale usually brings a higher price but takes more time and care.
What if my car is in another state's registration?
Transfers across states need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) and re-registration by the buyer. Ask your RTO for the current process.
Can I sell a car with a pending challan?
Clear all challans first. Pending challans can become a dispute and may block the transfer.
How long does it take to sell a used car?
It depends on the price, model and city. A fairly priced popular model can sell in a couple of weeks, while rare or overpriced cars take much longer.
