Start with the paperwork

  • Verify that the RC is original and the name matches the seller. Check the engine and chassis numbers on the car against the RC.
  • Check insurance validity and the claim history if the seller can share it. Several claims can mean accident repair.
  • Check for pending challans and hypothecation. If a loan existed, ask for the closure letter and Form 35.
  • Ask for the service history. A car with regular service records at a known workshop is much safer.

Look at the exterior and interior

  • Walk around in daylight. Look for uneven gaps, mismatched paint, overspray on rubber trims and waviness in panels, which may signal repainting after an accident.
  • Check all four tyres for even wear and the same brand, and the spare tyre for condition.
  • Inside, check seat wear against the odometer, the pedals, the steering wheel and the AC vents. Heavy wear with low kilometres is suspicious.
  • Smell for dampness and look under the mats and in the boot for water marks or rust, which can mean flood damage.

Under the bonnet and the test drive

  • Start the engine cold. Look for smoke, oil leaks, unusual noise and warning lights on the dashboard.
  • On the drive, test acceleration, steering alignment, braking, gear shifts, suspension over bumps and AC cooling.
  • Check every window, mirror, light, wiper, horn, music system and central locking.

Get an independent inspection

  • A mechanic of your choice can check things you cannot see, such as the chassis, compression and suspension. Pay for it. It is cheap compared to a bad purchase.
  • Ask whether a professional inspection report or OBD scan can be done, especially for newer cars.

Negotiate and complete the deal

  • Use inspection findings to negotiate. Worn tyres, due service and cosmetic faults all give a fair reason to ask for a discount.
  • Pay by a traceable method and take a written receipt. Do not pay cash for the full amount at a roadside meeting.
  • Sign Form 29 and Form 30 with the seller, insure the car in your name and apply for the new RC without delay.
