How to sell a used bike or scooter in India
A used two-wheeler sells quickest when the papers are clean, the photos are honest and the price matches the local market. The biggest mistake sellers make is handing over the vehicle without completing ownership transfer, which can leave challans and accident liability on their name.

Papers to keep ready
- Registration Certificate (RC) in your name, valid insurance, and a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate.
- Service history and bills for major repairs, tyres and the battery if you have them.
- If there is a loan on the bike, ask the bank for the NOC and have the hypothecation removed from the RC before you sell.
- Both sets of keys and the original manual if available.
Get the bike ready
- Give it a proper wash and a basic service so that the engine starts easily. A clean bike with a recent service feels cared for.
- Fix small things such as a missing mirror or a dead indicator. They cost little but reduce the price a lot.
- Do not paint over scratches in a way that hides accident damage. Buyers inspect closely and honesty builds trust.
Photos and description
- Take photos from both sides, front, rear, odometer, engine, tyres, seat and the RC cover (hide the registration number if you prefer and share it on request).
- Mention the make, model, year, kilometres, number of owners, insurance validity, tyre condition, any modifications and the city or area.
- State whether the price is fixed or slightly negotiable.
Test ride and meeting
- Meet in the daytime at a public place. Ask the buyer to show a valid driving licence before a test ride.
- Go with the buyer on the test ride or keep a copy of their licence photo. Do not let a stranger ride away alone.
- If a mechanic check is requested, allow it at a nearby garage with you present.
Complete the transfer properly
- Take payment through a traceable method and wait for it to be credited before you give the vehicle and keys.
- Fill and sign the transfer forms with the buyer, commonly Form 29 and Form 30 in India, and keep your copy. Check the current procedure on the Parivahan or your state transport website, since rules can change.
- Inform your insurer and submit the transfer to the RTO within the time allowed in your state. Keep the acknowledgement as proof.
- Take a photo of the handover with the buyer's ID and write the date and time. This protects you from later challans.
What changes the price of a used two-wheeler
- Age and kilometres: lower kilometres and fewer owners raise the price.
- Papers: a clean RC, valid insurance and no pending challan make a vehicle easier to sell.
- Condition: tyres, chain, engine health, paint and any accident repair all matter. For an electric scooter, battery health and remaining warranty matter more than age.
- Do a service and keep the bills; honest repairs with clear papers sell faster than a high price with a long wait.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sell a bike if the RC is in my father's name?
The legal owner should sign the transfer. If the owner is a family member, it is easier to let them sign the forms.
Do I need to remove hypothecation before selling?
Yes. If the vehicle was bought on loan, the bank must clear the loan and issue the paperwork so that the lender's name is removed from the RC.
How do I handle buyers who want to pay by cheque or ask for a token advance?
Prefer cash or UPI that you can see credited. If you accept a token, write down the amount and the date and what happens if the buyer backs out.
Should I sell to a dealer or a private buyer?
Dealers give faster cash but usually offer less. A private sale through a classifieds listing can fetch more if you can wait a few weeks.
